ACAP Hickory Presents Driving and Aging

“I just noticed another dent on Mom’s car.”  “Dad told me he forgot how to get home from his barber shop last week.”  “Mom had to have a right knee and hip replaced, and Dad’s eyesight and hearing aren’t what they used to be.”
What’s appropriate — safe — relative to Mom’s and Dad’s driving?  Ceasing to drive is a significant step regardless of how the decision is made, who makes the decision or the reason for the decision.  Retiring from driving typically impacts the elder’s feelings of independence and being in control, may significantly affect opportunities for socialization, and often increases time and energy needed from the adult-child caregiver.
The June ACAP addresses issues related to parents’ driving and what to do when questions arise.  With a master’s degree in occupational therapy, Miriam Young, Driver Rehabilitation Specialist, Frye Regional Medical Center, will help attendees learn to:
– identify signs a parent may need a driving evaluation and/or to retire from driving
– understand the driving evaluation process
– become more aware of community mobility options
