The Importance of Social Engagement and Activities for Seniors

Social isolation and loneliness are recognized as significant public health issues due to their negative effect on health and quality of life among older adults. Over a prolonged period, these are greater predictors of premature death than many other chronic health issues. This ACAP program will help attendees become aware of local community programs, clubs, and leisure service organizations in Bergen County, and the important role they play in helping loved ones remain socially engaged and active.

Presenter:

Tess Tomasi, Information & Assistance/Care Management Supervisor, Bergen County Division of Senior Services

Tess started her career in service in 1995 in San Francisco and, since then, she has worked for nonprofit organizations and government agencies on issues such as housing, aging, disaster recovery, community development, and anti-poverty programs. In her current role at the Division of Senior Services, Tess oversees the Information & Assistance Unit, a team that helps thousands of older adults and caregivers access services they need to age-in-place in Bergen County. She also oversees the coordination of the Division’s care management system, which provides support to seniors who need long-term care services in their home.
