Many family caregivers try to do everything themselves—until a crisis reveals just how much support they need. One of the best ways to prepare is to build a caregiving team before an emergency occurs.
Start by identifying people who can help in different ways. A trusted family member or friend can share updates and notify others during a hospital stay. Clergy or faith community members can provide comfort, encouragement, and practical support. Neighbors may be willing to check on the house, collect mail, or water plants. Pet sitters can care for beloved animals when caregiving responsibilities suddenly increase. Keep a list of important service providers, such as physicians, home care agencies, plumbers, electricians, and transportation services.
You may never need all of these contacts at once but having them organized and ready can reduce stress and help everyone focus on what matters most—caring for your loved one and yourself.
