Communicating with someone living with Alzheimer's and other dementias
Communicating with someone who has Alzheimer's disease requires patience, understanding and compassion. As the disease progresses, memory loss and confusion can make it difficult for the person to understand conversations or express their thoughts. Effective communication involves speaking slowly, using simple words and short sentences, maintaining eye contact and allowing extra time for the person to respond. It is also important to listen carefully, avoid arguing or correcting mistakes, and offer reassurance when they become frustrated or confused. Good communication will reduce anxiety, strengthen relationships and improve their quality of life over all.
