The options for paying for long-term care are limited. Did you know that Medicare will not pay for home care or assisted living community care? Do you know what Medicaid provides? Are you aware of the Veterans Administration Aid and Attendance benefit? Most families do not realize their limited options until they are in a crisis—usually when their loved one is about to be discharged from a hospital. Making decisions while in a crisis can be stressful and result in bad choices. This discussion is intended to provide information prior to a crisis or loss of functional or cognitive capacity. Every second of every day, an older adult falls and one out of every 5 of these cause serious injury. Falls do not and should not be considered a normal part of aging. This presentation will discuss environmental and activity modifications that can help prevent falls.
Participants will understand communication changes related to Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. They will develop strategies for connecting with the person with dementia by "entering" the persons perspective/view of current reality. They will also develop strategies for communication throughout the course of the disease including the use of gestures, behaviors and use of the senses.
