Caring for My Parent with Serious Illness: Palliative Medicine and Hospice

Having a parent or other loved one who is seriously ill prompts a desire to find the best possible care (medically, physically, mentally and emotionally) for the loved one. One of the newest facets in the health care world is “palliative medicine,” the sensitive, comfort-oriented type of care that hospice nurses deliver to patients who are admitted to hospice programs at the end of life. The May 8 ACAP Hickory will offer a deeper understanding of Palliative Medicine and Hospice Care; how the services provide a continuum of medical, physical and emotional support for patients with serious, progressive illness; and how these two programs are similar but distinctive and unique from the other. In addition, program attendees will learn how these services are delivered, accessed and paid for so loved ones may receive a continuum of care, preventing lapses in support and re-hospitalizations. ACAP-Hickory provides information, resources, support and community for adult-children as we care for our aging parents and for ourselves. ACAP-Hickory meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month, 5:30-7:00 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church (2780 North Center Street, Hickory). (Please note that the December program is scheduled for the first Tuesday of the month.) While the cost-free monthly educational programs are designed for adult-child caregivers, sessions are open to all who are interested. Advance registration is strongly encouraged in order to facilitate planning.
