The Adult-Child Caregiver at Work

Date / Time: Tuesday, August 14, 5:30-7:00 pm

Location: Fellowship Hall, Mt. Olive Lutheran Church — 2780 N Center St., Hickory (beside RiteAid & Publix)

Presenters:  Susan H. Saylor, MS, Franchise Owner, Home Instead Senior Care; Beth Harris Brandes, MSW, Organizational Consultant; and Cynthia Eades, Catawba County Human Resource Director.  Each member of the panel has personal experience working for organizations while caring for their parents.

“Help me, I can’t get up!” This is a frightening phrase for family caregivers to hear when they are on their way to work or are already at work. Juggling work and caregiving presents unique challenges especially for women who assume 66% of caregiving nationally; although men also provide assistance, female caregivers spend as much as 50% more time providing care than male caregivers.

Are you one of the 65 million Americans who care for a family member? Attendees at the ACAP Hickory August 14 meeting will gain insight on how to handle workplace challenges when caring for a loved one.  The panel will discuss:
  • The economic impact and current trends of family caregiving.
  • Effective communication and advocacy strategies in the workplace.
  • Approaches for speaking with employers.
  • Tips and strategies while caring for loved ones and caring for oneself — which include exploring Family Medical Leave, Employee Assistance Programs, flex schedules, job shares and other resources.
