Caring for My Parent with Serious Illness:  Palliative Medicine and Hospice

Date / Time: Tuesday, May 8, 5:30-7:00 pm

Location: (THIS PROGRAM ONLY) Family Life Center, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church (52 16th Ave., NW, Hickory)

Presenter:  Julie Packer, RN, MSN, Director of Professional Relations, Catawba Regional Hospice

Having a parent or other loved one who is seriously ill prompts a desire to find the best possible care (medically, physically, mentally and emotionally) for the loved one.  One of the newest facets in the health care world is “palliative medicine,” the sensitive, comfort-oriented type of care that hospice nurses deliver to patients who are admitted to hospice programs at the end of life.  The May 8 ACAP Hickory will offer a deeper understanding of Palliative Medicine and Hospice Care; how the services provide a continuum of medical, physical and emotional support for patients with serious, progressive illness; and how these two programs are similar but distinctive and unique from the other.  In addition, program attendees will learn how these services are delivered, accessed and paid for so loved ones may receive a continuum of care, preventing lapses in support and re-hospitalizations.  During the program, attendees will gain an understanding of:

  1. The unique continuum of care Palliative Medicine and Hospice offer adult patients with serious, progressive illness,
  2. Palliative Medicine and Hospice Care services in the Unifour,
  3. How, where, when and by whom care is delivered; how to access the services; and how payment for care received from both of these programs is covered.

ACAP-Hickory gratefully acknowledges Catawba Regional Hospice as sponsor for the May ACAP Hickory program.

Hope you will join us for this important program!
