Partnering with Medical Professionals for Mom’s and Dad’s Best Care

Date / Time:  Tuesday, August 8, 5:30-7:00 pm

Location:        Fellowship Hall, Mt. Olive Lutheran Church (2780 N. Center, Street, Hickory)

Presenter:      Julie Packer, RN, MSN, Director of Professional Relations, Catawba Regional Hospice

As parents age, medical issues often arise.  Adult-children frequently become the ones who schedule appointments for their aging parents, accompany them to medical visits, help explain medicines and interpret treatments to parents and help explain parents’ symptoms to medical staff, serving as their parents’ advocates and caregivers.  Particularly for family members who have no (or limited) medical training, ensuring Mom and Dad receive the medical care they need can be overwhelming.

Julie Packer, RN/MSN and experienced liaison with area physicians, will share understandings from her years as a registered nurse, knowledge gleaned from her professional relationships with physicians and other medical staff, and insight from her own personal experience as an adult-child caregiver for her aging parents.  During the program, attendees will learn:

  1. How to appropriately prepare for a medical visit and/or conversation with medical staff
  2. Questions to ask and strategies for maximizing time with medical staff
  3. Approaches for strengthening parents’ medical care
  4. When to take the lead regarding medical conversations and decisions, and when to allow parents to make her/his own choices.

ACAP-Hickory gratefully acknowledges  Hickory Falls Health & Rehabilitation and Kindred at Home as sponsors for the August ACAP program.

Hope you will join us for this important program!
